How & Why You Can Use Live Video Streaming for Your Personal Brand – Part 1

Using Livestreaming Video Apps to Promote Your Personal Brand

The reason I take the time to learn any new tool, app, platform or process is so that I can apply it to the work I do for clients, for my own business or to share it with you so you can go make the world better. It’s important to learn how to use social media to promote your personal brand. It’s up to you to decide which ones you have time for and which ones are right for your brand and expertise. A live-streaming app may offer your potential customers a chance to get to know the real you, and especially if YOU are the product, you get to show them your finesse. Especially if you could use a platform that shows off your genuine expertise as a host, a product reviewer or spokesperson, live-streaming may be for you!

“It may sound crazy, but we wanted to build the closest thing to teleportation.” – via

What is it?

Livestreaming apps are basically mobile web cams: broadcasts viewable by the general public with access to the same app. Anyone can walk around to broadcast their version of his or her own reality show, and anyone can watch it.

Per, think of live broadcasting apps like the iPhone staple FaceTime, except it’s now open to anyone, and not limited by a silly ol’ phone number.

You’ll need an iPhone 6 or have an older iPhone running OS 8 to broadcast. You can watch on a desktop by clicking the link that Periscope puts out on Twitter.

Your broadcasts aren’t stored on a channel, like in YouTube. MeerKat will keep broadcasts available for 24 hours, and Periscope allows you to download your broadcast, but that’s kind of why each of them use the “pop-up” metaphor. Here … and gone. And there’s no way to watch anonymously, so there’s some accountability.

What makes this different from other social media platforms?

Video made better by real life. Like always, video has the ability to hold attention like nothing else. Now we have a venue to make live, real-time mistakes impact in front of potentially thousands of people. It’s also live, and the two-way communication can actually change the course of the broadcast:

After scrolling through a list of broadcasts one morning, I ended up watching a sous chef in Sweden prepare a piece of meat, but it was partially off camera, so I typed in a comment: “What is that?” He glanced at the screen then pulled a fish up by the tail in full view, and said, smiling, “Sea Bass!”. I was teleported to a cooking class at his restaurant’s kitchen! Really fun, actually; and if I were so inclined, I can now use a filet knife like a boss!

Who’s watching it?

  • Mostly internet users who are either tech geeks who have their finger on the pulse of the next big thing, or those working in digital marketing
  • The innately curious and/or voyeur in all of us.
  • In reality, not that many people right now, but this will change, which means if you start now, you could rule this space. Because there aren’t that many people/channels available to watch, if you start scheduling high quality and interesting “shows” – you are likely to be speaking to a few devoted fans/watchers that will start spreading the word.Let’s get on the bottom floor of this skyrocketing elevator, shall we?”

The real vision is — it sounds very cliché — it’s something we call ‘spontaneous togetherness,'” says Ben Rubin, CEO and cofounder of Air, the company behind Meerkat (via Mashable).

Who’s broadcasting?

The apps are bleeding-edge new, so right now there seems to be five types of users:

  • News reporters, both pro and citizen journalists alike. Think: Political meetings or confrontations, parades, riots, protests, or even family picnics, baby’s first steps outside on the patio, here’s my dog chasing a frisbee, etc.
  • Bored kids/teens showing off their rooms and refrigerator contents.
  • Celebrities and on-air experts (Al Roker, Jimmy Fallon, for example) and their PR teams who are hoping to promote shows and incentives.
  • And most important to this blog post: reviewers, hosts, and experts who are sharing their content – this is where you and I come in …

The Top 3 Reasons NOT to Use a Twitter Validation Service

5 Top Reasons to Not Use Twitter Validator
Twitter, by its very nature, is a social tool. Just like in real life, you might meet some unsavory characters or aggressive car-salesman-types you’d like to avoid. You’re probably here to do business, right? So that means building out your audience fairly quickly (organically is still slow – don’t buy followers) and with enough engagement that your followers can see that you’re real and interested in them too. But I’m here to share with you that these validation services are a gatekeeper that is keeping out great minds from the nirvana of your amazing content and personality.

My top 3 reasons to avoid using services like True Twit:

– It doesn’t protect you from human spammers.
– You can still see tweets that mention you.
– You will eventually get unfollowed.

I’m trying really hard to think of a good reason to put blinders on people who want to view your Twitter content, but I’m coming up dry. Have you created an exclusive group that is open to a select few or, is it that you don’t want to see the possibly questionable profiles and tweets of those who are following you? Those accounts can be blocked manually.

Spam- Hey, @Dede_Watson you won’t believe this news about your neighbor!

FAST and EASY Turn It Social tip to block a spammy Twitter account for desktop and iphone:

1) Open the tweet of the offending account
2) Click on the three dots in the lower right hand corner
3) Choose “Block or Report”
4) Choose”Block” in the upper right corner
5) That user will no longer be able to interact with you, and you won’t see content from them.

So why keep out the quality but busy thought leaders who will happily move on to the next “you” out there on Twitter? There are close to 300 million ACTIVE accounts on Twitter right now, so maybe you aren’t the special snowflake after all. There is irony in trying to cut down on spam, then receiving a spam DM that says “[FollowerName] uses TrueTwit Validation Service. To validate, click here… “

I’d like to hear your thoughts on the contrary. Are you a Tweeter who uses the service, and if so, I’m curious why. Of the people who are taking the validation bait, are you more likely to engage with the True Twit user, and True Twit account holders, do you feel that the quality of engagement with your followers is higher? Or are you like me and eventually adding them to the “unfollows”?

Wake Up And Pay Attention To Your Brand

Pay attention to your brand

One of the first things I learned about branding is that consistency on your social platforms is as crucial to growing your brand out as is being engaged. I would actually say more so; since if you don’t have a clear message and targeting a defined space, then you are wasting time! It’s great to have social friends and I have been fortunate to make many, but my main end goal via social media is to create new opportunities for my business.

Over the past year, I have been extremely fortunate to grown my business to six figures. I’ve worked 60+hour weeks for the past 7 years and 2 years ago was able to leave my full time job to turn my passion for social media into a full time career as well as hire 2 part time assistants!!

What has happened to my own personal brand is that as a result of a big ramp up in business, I have seriously neglected all the things that I tell my clients they must do to be successful!! It’s very embarrassing when you are telling someone they need to update the look of their brand and work on the SAME details that you do not. How can I be taken seriously if I am not living by what I teach?

As a result, I became almost invisible on my own social media accounts and stopped adding content to my blog. I couldn’t seem to find time to spend even 30 minutes per day. Additionally, there is no consistency in the look of my brand. Imagery is different across all my platforms.

Almost everyone who has a Twitter account or Facebook fan page today has some type of brand; whether it be a product, business or personal brand. That means they are looking for opportunities and want to be effective with their marketing on Social Media.

3 things  you need to do NOW:

  •  Create a consistent branded profile throughout your social media platforms. Make sure your banners/headers are recognizable across all sites.
  • Twitter will be your most effective platform for making connections and potential clients!! Providing great content that will resonate with your followers and reflect your brand are highly effective. Real-time engagement with those followers is essential.
  • Create a blog if you don’t currently have one. Add at least 1-3 new post weekly.

Those are all the things I will be doing over the next 3-4 weeks. I’m in the process of a website redesign as well as updating all my graphics across my social media platforms. I am dedicated to returning to being the actively engaged person I used to be and will be sharing with you along the way!!

What areas have you neglected in your branding via social and what do you intend to do to improve them? Let’s do this together!!!

How To Create A Dynamic Free Twitter Profile Header in Minutes

Dynamic Twitter Profile In Minutes

I really admire people that are can create incredible graphics for blogs and social media. I simply do not have a great artistic talent. I am a terrific critic after the fact, but like many people, I have not been too successful at accomplishing it without paying $$$ for it.

So what have I been missing all this time???

An EASY to use tool where I could drag, paste and upload!!! Where you can create an incredibly crisp and clean social media header with little effort.

The past few months, I have been using a tool that is incredibly easy and effective to create header graphics on

One of the issues with creating a graphic is getting the right resolution. I always found that when I tried to increase it to the appropriate size, the image would tend to get fuzzy. Have you experienced this??

With, you can choose from a large selection of Twitter, Facebook and Google+ covers. You can use their designs, some for free and others only $1. I chose to create  my own background from their large selection and I believe I did pay $1. It’s certainly a lot less than the average price of $150 to hire a graphic designer. Best of all, you can go back later and modify your design!! Canva saves your banner!!

Below is my own Twitter profile header. You can be the judge. What do you think?

How Twitter Keeps Getting More Social With Photos

Twitter rolled out 2 new features in March that are an attempt to match 2 of Facebook’s most popular features. They realize how important images are to their followers and have responded with 2 incredible ways you can turn your tweets into a higher level of social engagement with photo tagging and adding up to 4 pictures to a tweet.

Why is it important to add photos to your tweets?

  1. According to Twitter,  tweets that have images receive a 35% boost in retweets.
  2. Since people are visual, it tends to draw their attention to you. It can increase your following, create conversation.
  3. If you are promoting an event, chat, or product, it will generate more interest in what you are promoting. Quotes within an image are also  a great example of what tweets are well received with photos.
  4. Showing your “personal” side with your followers. People connect with those they feel comfortable with.  Personal photos normally are well received with retweets.

Advantages of Photo Tagging

  1. Tagging doesn’t affect character count.
  2. You can tag up to 10 people.
  3. If you are tagged in a photo, you’ll receive notification in your stream.
  4. Photo tagging and Tweets with multiple photos will display in an embedded tweet.

I use often use images with my client’s tweets to make an impact. This doesn’t mean that every tweet should have an image attached. Use them where you feel they will be most effective. Check your analytics through Twitter Analytics and other sites like Kred, They are both 2 free incredible resources that will give you a great overview and insight into what tweets are driving the most engagement. Love them both.

What success have you had with tweeting with images and do you find certain types of images are working better for you?

Top 3 Free Twitter Tools You Can’t Live Without

Free Twitter Tools

Twitter can become very time consuming if you don’t have an efficient system in place to reduce the hours you spend networking and promoting. You can literally spend hours daily and still not make a dent in what you are trying to accomplish.

Top 3 Free Twitter Tools:

1. Hootsuite- I still talk to people who are very active in managing social media accounts who tell me that they only tweet live. That they don’t like to automate tweets. I am a HUGE believer in live social engagement with other Tweeps. It’s extremely important that you don’t solely “automate” your tweets. HOWEVER, there are not enough hours in a day to tell your story and keep in the stream if you only tweet live.

Posting informative, relevant content can help you grow your following and get the attention of those you are trying to reach. You can accomplish this through a fantastic free Twitter tool called Hootsuite.

Hootsuite is a social media dashboard that allows you to manage multiple social networks, schedule tweets and messages, track brand mentions, and analyze social media traffic. You can manage your social media profiles from a single dashboard. It’s an incredible tool for those who are serious about growing their social media presence.

2. Tweepi- Tweepi is great tool for cleaning  up your following. Twitter is very generous in allowing you to follow a lot of people without regards to count ratio until you reach 2,000. Once you follow 2,000 people, Twitter puts the breaks on and you must concern yourself with following to follower ratios.

You cannot follow more than 10% over who is following you. For example, If you are following 2,001 people and only 1,800 are following your account, you will have to wait until more follow you or you unfollow before you are allowed to  follow more people. More here in Twitter’s Help Section.

With Tweepi, you can “flush” followers from your account. You have the ability to see who is not following you and unfollow them. Tweepi allows you to also set filters to have a very broad overview of a profile. You can also follow people from Tweepi’s dashboard as well as utilize it to follow the followers of influencers.

Top 3 Twitter Tools

3. Kred- I love Kred for reasons that many people probably aren’t aware of. It’s great to have a high Kred score, but it’s not something that I focus on. What is really fantastic about this site is that you can use it as an overview of what is working really well for you on Twitter. You can use this very helpful tool to also set up your “evergreen” tweets with the best of your content.

These 3 free Twitter  tools are very powerful for really jump starting your social media. I love free tools and try to avoid paying for what can result in a very pricey monthly bill for tools that are not always extremely effective. I also utilize a few premium Twitter tools that I will be sharing with you soon!!

Please share with me your experiences using any of the Twitter tools mentioned here and also leave your questions below.

Protected Tweets- 5 Reasons You Don’t Want To Protect Your Tweets

There are many reasons why people might feel a need to protect their Tweets.  What people may not understand about Twitter is that this is not the same as Facebook. You are not necessarily creating a new foundation of  “friends” in the same sense as you might on Facebook.

Although Twitter is an amazing place to make new friends, many people are signing up to create exposure for their current or future business endeavors. What Twitter offers you is the amazing ability to connect with people in a way that is not currently available on Facebook. Protecting your tweets will hamper your abilities to connect and increase your visibility and following.

If your end goal on Twitter is to create a presence for your brand, you will need to be available and visible to others in order to accomplish this. Protected Tweets will greatly slow these efforts.

Here are 5 reasons you don’t want to protect your tweets:

  1. Protected tweets cannot be re-tweeted.
  2. Protected tweets will not show up in searches.
  3. You must approve followers before they can follow you.
  4. People will not see your tweets unless you are following them.
  5. Protecting your tweets make people more skeptical about following you since they cannot see your tweets.

Twitter is the absolute best and most effective place to connect with people and promote your business. Protected tweets are only necessary if you want to keep your following small, or your tweets private within your social circle such as students, clubs.

Would love to hear your thoughts if you are currently protecting your tweets and how this affects your ability to network on Twitter.

Twitter Analytics Now Open To All Users

Twitter recently opened up their analytics to everyone, not just ad customers. What this means to you as a Twitter user is that you will now have some free metrics to gauge your performance on Twitter. You can locate the analytics area on the Twitter Ads Dashboard.

There are 2 areas that are available for those who do not wish to purchase “sponsored ads”.

1. Timeline Activity-

You can view your mentions, follows and unfollows for the month. You can also see your most recent tweets and more metrics that can be helpful for content curation  and promotions such as click throughs, replies and rts. Being able to see the time stamp of your tweets and the most popular ones will give you an edge in creating better content for your followers and show who is engaging with you when.

Being able to get an overview of the types of people who are following you as well as their demographics can be immensely important. It can help you evaluate if you are focusing enough on a specific industry or location.  Twitter’s new analytics provides us with a limited overview of your followers broken down into interests, gender and location.

A graph is provided to show your new follower count so that you can see the progression of your following which is updated weekly. Also, you can now download a CVS file with all of this data.  Especially helpful if you want to save your tweets to re-post later.

Have you used the new Twitter Analytics and how do you think it compares to other sites such as Sprout Social or Hootsuite?
